Report recommends steps to address discrimination in Huron-Perth

Indigenous people, immigrants and visible minorities are more likely to experience discrimination than white, non-immigrant individuals in Huron and Perth Counties, a new research report has found. Dr. Natalia Lapshina, Dr. Victoria Esses and the Network for Economic and Social Trends of Western University conducted the research, in partnership with the Forum Research Inc. who administered a survey to 595 individuals in Huron and Perth Counties.

Huron County Library will eliminate overdue fines in 2022

The Huron County Library is very pleased to announce that starting Jan. 1, 2022, the library will no longer charge fines on overdue materials. All outstanding overdue fines will be forgiven effective Jan. 1, 2022. Fees will, however, continue to be charged for lost or damaged materials.

The Transportation Departments of Grey, Bruce, and Huron County have partnered with the Ministry of Transportation and the Ontario Provincial Police to remind the public about Winter Road Safety. All roadway users must travel safely, share the road, and respect others.

County of Huron Reopens Emergency Shelter for Cold Weather Season

Opening November 15th, the County of Huron’s Huron Out of the Cold: Heart to Home emergency shelter offers wrap-around supports for homeless individuals in Huron County, including staff specially trained in trauma informed care, substance use, and mental health services. The emergency shelter will be located at Lakeshore United Church in Goderich and will be able to accommodate up to 15 individuals per evening, with meals provided, for the cold weather season.

Huron County Museum helps local IODE chapter commemorate special anniversary with installation of poppies this Remembrance Day

The Huron County Museum is pleased to partner with the IODE Maple Leaf Chapter in Goderich to commemorate the IODE’s 120th anniversary by draping poppies over the Museum’s Sherman Tank this Remembrance Day. The installation of the poppies will take place at the Museum on Oct. 28 and the media is invited to visit the site at 11:30 a.m. to take photos.

County of Huron Explores Dispersed Supportive Housing Options

The County is working towards the creation of a dispersed, or scattered-site, model of supportive housing.  Supportive housing aims to reduce or eliminate the need for emergency and cold weather shelters by providing individuals in-need with a home that includes year-round wrap-around supports and services.

Celebrating Small Business Week in Huron County

From October 18th to 22nd, 30 small businesses across the county, chosen in consultation with local BIAs and Chambers, received a ‘coffee break’ delivery of locally-sourced pies and coffee from Huron County Economic Development as a gesture of appreciation for their impact on the local community. Honouring Treaties Recognition Week with the Huron County Museum and Randall Kahgee

Six Huron County Students Receive Funding for Business Start-Ups

The Summer Company program, administered by the County of Huron, aims to equip students with the tools they need to succeed, as they learn how to run a business, receive mentorship and training, and develop skills that are highly valued in all workplaces. Students between the ages of 15 and 29, who are returning to school in the fall, can apply to receive up to $3,000 in start-up funding and business coaching to run their own summer business.
