Huron County, Ontario – The County of Huron has launched a new Winter Road Conditions webpage to help residents stay informed and safe during winter weather. The page displays information sourced directly from Municipal 511 and provides easy access to real-time road closure updates, winter maintenance information, and helpful driving and plow-safety tips.
The updated page can be found on the County’s website at: HuronCounty.ca/public-works/winter-road-conditions
This winter, residents can also view all County road closures — as determined and posted by the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) — directly on Municipal 511, a map-based tool used by road authorities across Ontario to share live road status information: www.municipal511.ca
In addition, province-wide highway conditions are available at: www.511on.ca
How winter road closures are shared:
When winter weather makes conditions unsafe, the OPP may close a County road. These closures are entered by the OPP into Municipal 511, where they update in real time. The County’s website pulls this information from Municipal 511 to provide residents with an easy, single point of access. This process improves accuracy, reduces delays, and ensures the public receives consistent information directly from the OPP.
“Winter weather can change quickly in Huron County, and conditions can deteriorate with little warning,” says Imran Khalid, Director of Public Works. “We urge all drivers to use caution anytime there is snow, ice, freezing rain, or blowing snow on the roads.”
Winter driving safety tips include:
- Slow down and allow extra time to reach your destination.
- Stay well back from working snowplows. If you can’t see the plow’s mirrors, the plow operator can’t see you.
- Never pass a working plow.
- Make sure your vehicle is winter-ready with snow tires, a full gas tank, and an emergency kit.
- Avoid unnecessary travel during poor weather.
