The Corporation of the County of Huron’s Homes for The Aged Department is seeking a seasonal Maintenance Student!

Position Summary

The role of the Maintenance Student is to assist, organize, and undertake routine maintenance activities both inside and outside of the building. Ensuring a safe environment for residents, visitors, and team members. All duties are performed in the best interest of the residents and their families, in accordance with Huron County Homes for the Aged Vision, Mission, and Values and Strategic Plan.

Role and Responsibilities

  • As directed and in accordance with the County of Huron Homes for the Aged Policies and Procedures, applicable codes, legislation/regulations and MOLTC Standards. Assist in processes for ongoing preventative, remedial, and emergency maintenance. Maintain recording logs for maintenance schedules and provide input to changes to systems as required to improve documentation and inspection processes.
  • Assist with services and repairs to maintain homes, equipment, furnishings, fixtures and grounds in proper repair for the safety of residents, staff and visitors. Including minor carpentry, painting and general maintenance tasks as required.
  • Assist with ground-keeping including grass/ flower bed upkeep.
  • Report on any security concerns and/or substandard or unusual building conditions to the Manager of Building Services
  • In collaboration with the maintenance team, identify and mitigate concerns with innovative solutions.
  • Sets and achieves departmental goals in collaboration with department team members
  • Responsible for following organizational policies, procedures, guidelines, and documentation standards related to environmental services in the homes.
  • Assist in maintaining regular audits, implementing corrective action for areas identified as deficient and ensuring follow-up for ongoing compliance.
  • Undertakes minor carpentry, painting, power washing, and indoor/outdoor general maintenance tasks as required.
  • Assists and coordinates with Maintenance Staff in undertaking inspections and minor repairs to equipment such as tubs, lifts, kitchen equipment, washers and dryers for effective completion of tasks in a timely way. Also assists housekeeping with maintenance related activities (i.e. vent cleaning).
  • Participates in committee meetings, i.e Fire Safety and Occupational Health & Safety.
  • Works to create a healthy work environment using a team approach and interdisciplinary collaboration with other teams in both homes. Abides by all county and home specific policies.
  • This role will require travel between both locations
  • Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications and Education

  • Secondary School education, graduation diploma, first year post-secondary
  • Successful Vulnerable Sector Check, proof of Measles immunization and TB Testing
  • Demonstrated ability to maintain and repair machinery, general carpentry skills, painting, and ground-keeping knowledge
  • Ability to maintain documentation and records and recommend appropriate course of action relating to auditing and inspections
  • Must have a valid Driver’s License

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Highly motivated with a strong customer service focus.
  • Ability to work independently and in a close team.

Competitive Compensation

  • Starting hourly wage as per 2026 non-union student wage grid: $18.67/hr
  • $2 Environment Factor/per hour
