Huron County, Ontario – The County of Huron celebrated the completion of a new affordable housing development on Sanders Street in Exeter with a ribbon-cutting ceremony on November 20, 2024. This project is part of the ongoing effort to address housing needs in the region, with funding partially provided by the Canada-Ontario Community Housing Initiative.
“This new affordable housing development is an important step toward ensuring that every resident in Huron County has access to safe, quality housing,” said Huron County Warden, Glen McNeil “We are proud to collaborate with our partners to address the growing need for affordable housing in our communities.”
The Sanders Street development consists of a two-storey, 20-unit apartment building, featuring 20 one-bedroom units. Seven of these units are fully accessible, ensuring inclusivity for residents with mobility challenges. The building is equipped with essential amenities, including laundry facilities, an elevator, and individual control over heating and air conditioning. Each apartment is also furnished with a full-size refrigerator and stove.
“Exeter is a wonderful place to live, and today’s ribbon cutting is a celebration of how we are making it even more accessible for people who need affordable options,” stated George Finch, Mayor of South Huron. “This development will make a real difference for residents who are looking for a place to call home.”
In Ontario, affordable housing is defined as housing that costs less than 30% of a household’s gross income, while deeply affordable housing costs less than 50%. The Sanders Street development will offer a mix of affordable and deeply affordable units to individuals who meet the qualifications required for tenancy.
“Affordable housing is a key priority for our government, and we are proud to partner with Huron County by contributing $6.4 million in funding to help make these kinds of developments a reality,” said Hon. Lisa Thompson, MPP. “This project will not only provide homes for many families but it also contributes to building stronger, more resilient communities.”
The County of Huron extends its gratitude to JPM Architecture Inc. (formerly Allan Avis Architects) for the innovative design and to Bronnenco Construction for their high-quality work in bringing the project to completion.
