Huron County Urges Residents to Take Part in Emergency Preparedness Week

Huron County, Ontario – Natural hazards may be beyond our control, but there are simple steps we can all take to reduce the risks and impacts of emergencies.

Emergency Preparedness Week, taking place May 4 to 10, 2025, is a national initiative led by Public Safety Canada in collaboration with provincial and territorial governments, Indigenous organizations, non-governmental groups and the private sector. The week encourages Canadians to take concrete action to better prepare themselves and their households.

“Emergency situations can happen quickly and without warning, but being prepared can make all the difference,” said David Wagner, Community Emergency Management Coordinator for Huron County. “By taking just a few simple steps — knowing the risks, making a plan and building an emergency kit — residents can significantly improve their ability to respond and recover.”

Huron County is encouraging all residents to:

  • Know the risks – Understand the potential hazards in your community.
  • Make a plan – Ensure your household knows what to do in an emergency.
  • Get an emergency kit – Be prepared to be self-sufficient for at least 72 hours.

Whether it’s a power outage, severe weather, or another emergency, preparation can reduce stress, protect your family and even save lives.
