Huron County, Ontario – The Huron County Museum is celebrating its 75th anniversary and everyone is invited to join the festivities on Saturday, July 4.
Founded around the collection of Joseph Herbert Neill, the Huron County Museum first opened its doors in the former Central School in Goderich on July 4, 1951. With a vision to preserve and share the rich history of Huron County through his extensive collection of artifacts, Mr. Neill’s museum was far ahead of its time. When most museums were strictly “hands-off”, he created a museum filled with hand-crafted models that visitors are still encouraged to try out today.
This milestone anniversary provides an opportunity to honour Mr. Neill’s legacy while celebrating the Museum’s ongoing role in preserving the stories, traditions, and heritage that define Huron County’s unique rural character.
In the spirit of Mr. Neill, who was an avid collector and tinkerer, the anniversary celebration will feature a day of creative fun and interactive activities for all ages.
Activities include:
- Mask making workshop with Trash Theatre
- Train display featuring Thomas the Tank Engine and Percy
- Digital Scavenger Hunt
- Doodle Booth to receive your own hand drawn portrait
- Cupcakes, crafts, lawn games and more!
“We are proud to celebrate this important milestone and to honour the vision of Joseph Herbert Neill,” said Elizabeth French-Gibson, Senior Curator. “For 75 years, the Museum has connected people with the stories that have shaped our community. We look forward to welcoming residents and visitors alike to join us in celebrating our past, present, and future.”
The celebration will take place at the Huron County Museum, 110 North St., Goderich, on Saturday, July 4, from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Admission is free to both the Museum and the Huron Historic Gaol.
