Residents reminded to participate in Huron County Internet Survey

The County of Huron is working together with local Internet service providers to expand access to high-speed broadband in our region.

Residents are asked to participate in a brief survey and conduct Internet speed tests from their homes and businesses to provide information about their Internet service. This information will be used to support an application to the Connect to Innovate program, which is a Government of Canada fund dedicated to expanding broadband in rural and remote areas. Participation in this survey is voluntary, but the information is vital to the success of future funding applications.

As of mid-February, roughly 1000 surveys have been completed. However, the funding application will become stronger with more residents participating – especially those living in rural areas.

“High-speed Internet access is about connecting small businesses to the marketplace and our youth to their future,” said Warden Jim Ginn. “If you live in a rural area and support the expansion of high-speed Internet in Huron County, now is the time to participate.”

Under Council’s direction, County staff have been working with local Internet service providers to develop made-in-Huron solutions to connect our residents to high-speed broadband service. This work has already yielded progress with the announcement on January 23^rd, 2017 of a successful application to the Small Communities Fund for a project that will connect or improve the connection of nearly a thousand homes, several small businesses and one school in Huron County.
