Huron County, ON – Mothers in southern Huron County have a new place to turn for breastfeeding support. MILKS (Mothers Initiating Lactation Knowledge & Support) will be holding monthly meetings in Hensall starting in February.
The group is made up of mothers who have breastfed their babies and want to help and support other breastfeeding mothers. MILKS also offers this support the first Tuesday of each month at the Child and Family Centre at Goderich Public School from 1:30 to 3pm.
Public Health Nurse Marguerite Falconer says breastfeeding is the best food for babies and offers many health benefits. “While breastfeeding is a natural process, it can take some time for both you and your baby to learn the how-to’s. Who better to learn from than other mothers?”
Health Canada recommends breast milk for two years and beyond, with the addition of iron rich foods at six months.
MILKS also offers support to all Huron County breastfeeding mothers through email huronmilks [at] gmail [dot] com and a Facebook page (search MILKS Breastfeeding Support in Huron).
Starting February 25, MILKS will meet the last Tuesday of each month at Hensall United Church (76 King St, Hensall) from 10-11:30am. All mothers are welcome to come and learn more about nursing their babies. A public health nurse from the Huron County Health Unit will be there as well to answer any questions and weigh babies. Ontario Early Years will be offering a play group at the church as well.
