4 Seasonal Museum Assistants

The Huron County Museum and Historic Gaol has student seasonal employment opportunities, including four student Museum Assistants. The positions will assist with the day-to-day operations of the Museum & Historic Gaol, provide visitor services through the summer season and be each be responsible for a special project based in public programming, research or the collection.

2020 projects may include education programs and outreach, research and exhibit design, digitization of collections, and/or event planning. The ideal candidate will enjoy serving the public, be an independent worker and have an avid interest in local history.

Hours of work:

  • May 4 through September – 35 hours per week as scheduled, weekends required
  • Hours of work generally fall within 9:00 am to 5:00 pm
  • Evening work is required for some positions

Wages Hourly wage $15.58 grant-dependent


  • Available to start May 4th
  • Demonstrated interest in local history, culture or heritage
  • Creativity & ability to problem solve
  • Excellent organization, writing skills, research skills and attention to detail
  • Excellent verbal communication and enthusiasm for working with the public
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Office
  • Previous experience working with children an asset
  • Experience working with cash is an asset
  • Skills with graphic design programs, including Adobe InDesign, an asset
  • A police security clearance check may be required prior to hiring
  • Post-secondary students or recent graduates in the fields of History, Museum Studies, Education, Library Sciences, Child and Youth studies, Early Childhood Education or related fields in the Humanities, Social Studies or Sciences preferred

Seasonal employment opportunities and projects are grant dependent. Applicants for these positions must qualify under the Young Canada Works in Heritage Institution program and clearly outline their eligibility in their cover letter and/or resume:

  • Be between 16 and 30 years of age
  • Full-time student
  • Eligible to work in Canada
  • Be returning to school in the fall
  • Be registered with YCW candidate inventory–
  • Preference is given to candidates who have not already been hired under Young Canada Works
