The Corporation of the County of Huron’s Cultural Services-Museum Department is seeking Museum Assistant(s)!

Position Summary

The Huron County Museum & Historic Gaol requires up to five seasonal Museum Assistants for the period of May-September, 2025, to conduct visitor services as well as project work at the Huron County Museum and the Huron Historic Gaol.

Role and Responsibilities

Seasonal Museum Assistants provide coverage and customer service at the front desk of both sites (the Huron County Museum and Historic Gaol) including admissions and handling cash. They also offer historical interpretation and guidance for our many summer visitors. The student will have responsibility for an ongoing project related to collections, public programming or research.

Qualifications and Education

  • Must be a full-time post-secondary student pursuing a college or university degree in History, Museum Studies, Public History, Education, Child & Youth Studies or related field.

Preferred Skills

  • Enthusiasm for local history, culture and heritage
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, including public speaking
  • Experience with research, data entry and/or detailed reporting
  • Knowledge of photography and basic photography and/or scanning equipment
  • Proficient with Microsoft suite of office programs
  • Experience with WordPress and/or Adobe suite of photo editing software
  • Experience working with children or youth
  • Experience with cash register and debit/credit machine an asset

Hours of work

  • 35 hours per week as scheduled, weekends required
  • Hours of work generally fall between 9:00 am to 5:00 pm
  • Evening work is required for some positions

Additional Note

Some of these positions will be partially funded by the Young Canada Works in Heritage Institutions program. Eligible candidates must be 16 to 30 years of age, eligible to work in Canada, and registered with the YCW candidate inventory. They must be willing to commit to the full duration of the work period and be registered as a full-time student in the semester preceding their start date, and intend to return to full-time studies immediately following the work period. Preference is given to candidates who have not previously been hired in a position funded by Young Canada Works.

Wages

  • College/University level – $17.72/per hour as per 2024 Non-Union Student Wage Grid
  • Masters level – $21.92/per hour as per 2024 Non-Union Student Wage Grid
