Brody’s Builds: Summer Company Success Story

A thoughtful mother’s day gift idea has turned into a flourishing business for Brody Nesbitt, owner of Brody’s Builds.  After constructing a raised garden bed for his grandmother, Nesbitt posted an offer to build more on Facebook and quickly realized that demand was high.  He expanded his business to include holey boards (small, carpeted board game played with rings) and cornhole boards (large, single-holed board game played with bean bags), which can be customized with vinyl stickers. Nesbitt does all the building himself, with occasional help from his father. Initially underestimating demand for his product, Nesbitt ended up making 75 raised garden beds, 80 cornhole boards, and 12 holey boards throughout the 2020 season and has proven to be a successful young entrepreneur.

The 16-year-old from Blyth is hoping to become an electrician or carpenter in the future, with sights on starting his own business and continuing his entrepreneurial journey. Nesbitt has always loved working with his hands but credits his woodworking knowledge to his ninth-grade shop class at Central Huron Secondary School (CHSS).

Nesbitt notes that a key moment in his entrepreneurial journey was his acceptance with the Huron County Summer Company program, which provides business grants and mentoring for students looking to open a summer business.  “The Summer Company really changed everything. It made it so much easier to make more and sell more. I couldn’t have done it without it,” he states. “ I would recommend the program to others in the community.”  He used his grant money to purchase lumber and materials and appreciated having a member of the Summer Company check in throughout the season. “They helped me overcome getting started, to get the ball running and get going. The start-up costs really helped.”

Nesbitt is pleased with how well his business has taken off.  “I love doing business in Huron County,” he says, stating that he appreciates the nice, polite, trustworthy people in the region.  “It’s a great community.  There are lots of people that love being outdoors and will buy the product.” Brody wished to extend special thanks to Blyth Printing for their help with project customization.

Nesbitt’s customers report that they were happy and satisfied with their product. To explore Brody’s product selection visit and follow Brody’s Builds on Facebook. Though holey boards are the only available product at the moment, stay tuned for upcoming projects in spring 2021.
