Westcoast Bakes and Cakes: Starter Company Plus Success Story
Last year, Tracy Widdis, owner of West Coast Bakes and Cakes took part in the Huron County Starter Company Plus program. Tracy had a passion for creating amazing and delectable treats and enjoys taking her creative energies to the next level. A self-pronounced people-pleaser, Tracy loves bringing people joy with the food she bakes and takes great pride in creating something that can’t be found in a grocery store or other shop.
After dreaming about starting her business for many years, the Starter Company Plus program was the incentive Tracy needed to take action. “Working with Patrick was great. He really helped me realize that I have a viable product and that my dream could become a successful business,” said Tracy. “My experience was fantastic – Huron County Economic Development was very supportive and answered all my questions. Working through the training was very helpful. When it came to giving my pitch, I wasn’t intimidated, because I felt prepared. I would recommend this program to anyone who wants to get started with their own business.”
Since opening in August of 2020, Tracy has been overwhelmed by the support of her customers. Opening a business in the middle of a pandemic is one of Tracy’s biggest accomplishments. “It can be scary, but the grant kicked my butt to do it. We’ve been busier than I ever imagined being during a pandemic and during the off-season. I wasn’t expecting this little shop of mine to take off as well as it has,” said Tracy.
Westcoast Bakes and Cakes is a way that Tracy can give back to Huron County. After growing up in Huron County, she wanted to be able to give back to the locals in a way that was meaningful. Tracy wanted to stay in Huron County and running her business here was important to her. Her business model is built around supporting other local businesses as Westcoast Bakes and Cakes proudly brews Shopbike Coffee and offers other local products in the shop including honey, candles, hot sauce and other homemade goods.
“Stop in for a great cup of coffee and try one of our fritters!” invites Tracy. The next time you are in Grand Bend, be sure to stop in for a sweet treat or to browse the local products.
