During the current COVID-19 pandemic, the County of Huron (as the Service System Manager of Child Care and Early Years for the County of Huron) together with the Province of Ontario, recognizes that health care and other essential frontline workers must continue to go to work to support our communities.
The County of Huron is required to have pandemic plans in place for licensed child care operators to open for Emergency Child Care. The County is working closely with Huron Perth Public Health to mitigate and reduce possible exposure or spread of COVID-19 in a licensed Emergency Child Care centre/home. Strategies include:
- Children and employees who are ill with fever and/or infectious respiratory symptoms are required to stay home;
- Daily active screening upon arrival;
- The consistent practice of proper respiratory etiquette and hand hygiene;
- Enhanced environmental cleansing and disinfecting of the centre/home;
- Physical distancing practices will be taken where possible; and
- Small groups of children within centre/home.
Emergency Licensed Child Care services are reserved exclusively for children of essential workers identified in the Province of Ontario’s List of Workers Eligible for Emergency Child Care, who have exhausted all other alternatives. Both parents are required to submit verification of employment and at least one parent is required to be on the eligibility list from the Province. Child Care will only be available for the dates that both parents are required to be working outside of the home. The safest option for families is to have children remain at home, if possible.
In order to support essential service workers with the care of their children, the County of Huron is partnering with London Bridge: Relouw Early Childhood Learning Centre and Huron County Community Home Childcare to provide Emergency Licensed Child Care at no cost. The County of Huron will be approving applications for Emergency Licensed Child Care spaces for eligible families on a first come, first served basis. Eligible workers seeking to access Emergency Licensed Child Care are required to complete and submit the online application. Spaces are limited.
The County anticipates that the level of demand for Emergency Licensed Child Care spaces may exceed the number of available Licensed Child Care spaces. If an Emergency Licensed Child Care space is not available at the time of request, the name of each eligible child will be kept on a waitlist. The waitlist will be prioritized into two categories. Priority #1 (both parents are on the list of eligibility) and Priority #2 (one parent is on the list of eligibility and the other parent is working away from the home). The waitlist date will be the date in which the completed application was received by the Children’s Services office.
