Due to time restrictions, as well as restrictions in the amount of space available horizontally on each web page, not all of the information contained in the original assessment lists and population returns could be included in this online version. Thus, we chose to include the columns which we felt to be the most relevant and useful to the general researcher. The Huron County Library, however, still maintains the microfilm archive of the original assessment rolls, which include all of the information and column headings, so if you desire more information on a particular entry those are available. Below is a list of all of the original headings, showing which ones we chose to include in this site and what we called them.


Assessment List

NAMES OF INHABITANTS.
This column gives the names of the various land owners. It is included in this online version as Name (A) (Meaning "Name that appears on the Assessment List").
LANDS.
Description or Portion of each Lot or Parcel of Land.
This column gives the amount, in acres, of land that each person owned. It is included in this online version as Total Acreage.
Number of Lot.
This column gives the lot number or numbers of the piece or pieces of land each person owned. It is included in this online version as Lot #.
Concession.
This column gives the concession number or numbers of the piece or pieces of land each person owned. It is included in this online version as Concession.
Uncultivated-4s. [i.e. valued at 4 shillings per acre of uncleared land]
Cultivated-£1. [i.e. valued at 1 pound currency per acre of land in use]
The number of acres in the two foregoing columns should add up to the Total Acreage entry.
HOUSES.
Square or hewed timber, on two sides, of one story. £20
Additional fire-places. £4
Square or hewed timber, on two sides, of two stories. £30
Additional fire-places. £8
Frame houses of one story. £35
Additional fire-places. £5
Brick or stone houses of one story. £40
Additional fire-places. £10

Population Return

NAMES OF HEADS OF FAMILIES.
This column gives the name of the head of each household. It is included in this online version as Name (P) (Meaning "Name that appears on the Population Report").
Number in each Family.

Over sixteen.
This column gives the number of males over the age of sixteen in the family. It is included in this online version as m>16.
Under sixteen.
This column gives the number of males under the age of sixteen in the family. It is included in this online version as m<16.
FEMALES.
Over sixteen.
This column gives the number of females over the age of sixteen in the family. It is included in this online version as f>16.
Under sixteen.
This column gives the number of females under the age of sixteen in the family. It is included in this online version as f<16.
Deaf and Dumb.
Insane.
