Good Food Box Now Available in Vanastra
Huron County - The Huron Good Food Box program has added a new host site in Vanastra to provide fresh, healthy and locally grown food at an affordable price for all area residents.

The Good Food Box is a volunteer-based program that provides a monthly box of fruits and vegetables to Huron County residents for just $15.00.

"We know that less than half of Huron County residents eat enough vegetables and fruit on a daily basis" says Amy MacDonald, Public Health Dietitian at the Huron County Health Unit. "The Good Food Box offers a variety of nutritious produce that can help your family eat healthier all year round."

Vanastra and area residents can now purchase the Huron Good Food Box at the Vanastra Rec Centre. Pre-paid box orders must be placed by the first Friday of the month, and pick-ups are typically the third Thursday of each month (unless otherwise notified). February box orders are due no later than Friday, February 3 and can be picked up at the Recreation Centre on Thursday, February 16 after 3:30 PM.

Details on ordering and pick-ups can be found by searching Good Food Box at www.huroncounty.ca/health or calling 519.482.3416 ext 2244. There is no obligation to order every month, but organizers encourage customers to try boxes over a two or three month period because box contents vary according to season and availability.

“This is great program that offers fresh foods that are locally-grown as often as possible,” says Good Food Box coordinator, Brittany Fry. “The box offers foods at an affordable price to all Huron County residents.”

Fry says the Good Food Box offers great value because the program is able to purchase produce in bulk and pass the savings along to the customers, often saving up to 40 per cent off of grocery store prices. “It provides consumers with access to healthy, nutritious food products while supporting local farmers, the local economy and the sustainability of a healthy community,” says Fry.

Fry emphasizes the Good Food Box is for all residents of Huron County because it's affordable for everyone. She says, "while the box is an excellent deal for those living with low incomes, it's also popular with many people who simply want to enjoy fresh local produce."

The Good Food Box program has distribution sites throughout Huron County including: Bayfield, Blyth, Clinton, Ethel, Exeter, Goderich, Grand Bend, Hensall, Seaforth, Wingham, and Zurich.

The Good Food Box relies on volunteers to pack and deliver boxes, take orders, collect payment and ensure that customers pick up their boxes.
