Math CAN be Fun… Together We Add Up

February 14, 2014

Huron County, ON – Would you like your children to experience success in math? Did you dislike math when you were in school? ESSO Family Math offers fun activities for children and parents to participate in together, in such a way that the children do not realize they are learning math.

The Ontario Early Years Centre offers a program that can help you to foster a positive view of math in your children at an early age. One activity from the program the children love to do is building a home for their bear. Each child receives a teddy bear and they build a home for their bear out of boxes and tubes. Math skills being developed are geometry, positional concepts, and measurement, and most of all a love of math concepts.

The ESSO Family Math program is a weekly parent-child interactive program that teaches parents how to incorporate math into everyday life. The activities in the ESSO Family math program are based on the 5 strands of math in the Ontario math curriculum; Number Sense and Numeration, Measurement, Geometry, Patterning and Algebra, and Data Management. (Ontario Ministry of Education and Training 1997 Grades 1-8 Mathematics Curriculum and 1998 Kindergarten Program)

Trained leaders facilitate the weekly 6 session program to Junior Kindergarten, Senior Kindergarten and grade 1 children and their parents/caregivers. Parents are taught to identify where the math is in an activity, and how to incorporate math into tasks at home. This sets the stage for lifelong learning of math and strengthens a parent’s ability to be involved in their child’s education.
