How can I find out about winter road conditions on County roads?
For winter road conditions, please listen to local radio stations. Decisions on road closures are determined by the Ontario Provincial Police, not our department. Huron County complies with the "Minimum Maintenance Standards for Municipal Highways" for winter maintenance as outlined in Ontario Regulation 239/02 of the Municipal Act.
During winter months, local radio stations provide regular announcements about school closures, bus delays and cancellations, weather and road conditions. This information may also be available on their websites and may be useful in determining travel conditions. Please remember that winter conditions can often change faster than the updates.
For information about conditions on highways within the County maintained by the Ministry of Transportation, please call their Road Information toll free at 1.800.268.4686 (TTY: 1.866.471.8929) or check their website.
How do I report a dead animal, or fallen tree on a County road?
If you wish to report the location of a dead animal or fallen tree obstructing the travel portion of a County road, contact the Auburn Patrol at 519.526.7231 to leave a message. Please be prepared to provide the name or number of the road, and an approximate location of the problem, including nearest concession or 9-1-1 number and side of roadway. The obstruction will be removed as soon as possible. Reports considered non-essential will be picked up during regularly scheduled maintenance.
What do you do with your older equipment?
Annually the Huron County Highways Department holds an auction sale of used County and Municipal equipment, such as pickups and crew cabs, floats, trailers, snowplows, graders and compressors. This event takes place late September or early October at the Auburn Patrol, 83091 Donnybrook Line, Auburn, Ontario. Only municipal equipment is considered for dispersal in this sale; everyone is welcome to purchase.
