Protect Yourself
West Nile virus is a virus that can be transmitted to people through the bite of an infected mosquito.
Mosquitoes transmit the virus after becoming infected by feeding on the blood of birds which carry the virus.
Most people infected with the virus have no symptoms or they may have flu-like symptoms. Sometimes, the virus can cause severe illness, resulting in hospitalization and even death so it is important to know how to minimize your risk, especially if West Nile Virus activity is reported within the county.
To protect you and your family, the following personal protection measures are recommended:
- Use a mosquito repellent containing DEET, and follow the manufacturer's instructions
- Wear light-coloured clothing and cover up in areas where mosquitoes are present
- Take precautions, especially in early morning and early evening, when mosquitoes are most active
- Repair any holes in door and window screens
- Remove standing water around your home
