Sudden Infant Death refers to the death of a healthy infant with no apparent cause after the death is fully investigated. No one knows why these healthy babies die so suddenly and unexpectedly. Research continues to be done to find answers.
In 2005, 25 babies died of SIDS in Ontario. It is estimated that 21 of those babies were in an unsafe sleeping environment. A safe sleeping environment includes:
- Putting your baby on their back to sleep in their own crib
- No bumper pads, toys, pillows, heavy blankets in the crib with the baby
- Not smoking during or after pregnancy
- No smoking in the home
- Breastfeeding is considered a protective factor
