Vaccines & Clinics

H1N1 and Seasonal Flu vaccine is available to all residents over 6 months of age.

It's not too late to get your H1N1 flu shot. While flu clinics are finished for 2009, most doctors' offices and family health teams are offering both seasonal and H1N1 flu vaccine to their patients.

Please call the health unit for an appointment for a flu shot if you do not have a family doctor or your child needs their second dose of H1N1 or seasonal flu vaccine

The Public Health Agency of Canada recommends the following for H1N1 flu vaccine dosing for children:
  • Healthy children 3 to under 10 years of age should receive only one half-dose of adjuvanted H1N1 vaccine.
  • Children 6 months to under 3 years of age should receive two half-doses of the adjuvanted H1N1 vaccine, given at least 21 days apart.
  • It is recommended that children 3 to under 10 years of age who have a compromised immune system receive two half-doses of the adjuvanted H1N1 vaccine, given at least 21 days apart. As well, children in this age group who have other chronic medical conditions that may increase their risk of influenza-related complications may also benefit from receiving two half-doses of the vaccine. Please discuss your child's needs with your family health care provider.

Please call the health unit for an appointment if your child cannot receive their second dose before the final scheduled community clinic.

The Huron County Health Unit has received the unadjuvanted H1N1 vaccine for pregnant women. All other people will continue to receive the adjuvanted vaccine. The adjuvant is a booster in the vaccine that allows more vaccine to be produced.

Some pregnant women have already received the adjuvanted vaccine. The adjuvanted vaccine has been strongly supported as safe and effective for pregnant women by health authorities. Some pregnant women preferred to wait for the unadjuvanted vaccine.

The unadjuvanted vaccine is available at special H1N1 clinics by appointment. Pregnant women can call the health unit at 1-877-837-6143.

Women can also call their health care provider. Several doctors' offices who are offering the H1N1 vaccine also have unadjuvanted vaccine. It is important that people living with a pregnant woman receive the adjuvanted vaccine.
