Waist-to-hip ration is a tool that can be used to help determine your risk for heart disease and diabetes. It provides a ratio (comparison) of your waist measurement to your hip measurement. Research shows that people with apple-shaped bodies (those who carry more weight around their waist) face more health risks than those with "pear-shaped" bodies (those who carry more weight around the hips).
- Measure around your hips at the widest part of your buttocks.
- Measure for how to take a proper waist circumference measurement around your waist at the belly button or just above it (the smallest part of your natural waist).
- Divide your waist measurement by your hip measurement.
- Assess your health risk.
| Lower Risk |
Higher Risk |
Waist-to-hip ratio less than 0.8 for women
Waist-to-hip ratio greater than 0.8 for women
Waist-to-hip ration less than 1.0 for men
Waist-to-hip ration greater than 1.0 for men
This is important because the more weight you carry around your middle, the higher your risk is for heart disease and diabetes, unlike weight carried around your hips and thighs.
