Safe food is something we may take for granted. Food has the potential to make us very sick if it is not handled and prepared correctly. Foods can carry and grow harmful bacteria, viruses, micro-organisms, fungi and parasites. Chemicals can also find their way on to our food, and make us sick.
The safe preparation and storage of the food we eat is important for people of all ages, especially:
- Babies and young children
- Pregnant women
- Older adults
Listeriosis Warning
The Chief Medical Officer of Health is warning the public not to consume certain Siena Foods Ltd. meat products, which may be contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes.
Why is Food Safety Important?
Public health experts estimate that there are 11 to 13 million cases of food borne illness, or food poisoning, in Canada every year.
Symptoms of food borne illness include: diarrhea, stomach cramps, nausea, fever and vomiting. These symptoms may begin as early as 30 minutes after eating contaminated food, or may not develop for several weeks.
Knowing and using safe food handling practices can prevent most cases of food borne illness within the community. The Huron County Health Unit provides information tips and classes to help consumers, service groups, restaurants and other commercial food services handle food products safely.
