The Eat Smart! Restaurant program has been discontinued at the provincial level. Therefore the Huron County Health Unit will no longer offer the Eat Smart! Restaurant program beyond the current year of 2009.
There are many reasons for ending the Eat Smart! Restaurant program, including:
- With the introduction of provincial legislation for smoke-free public places, and increased participation in safe food handler training, the Eat Smart! Food Safety Standard and Smoke-Free Standard are no longer necessary.
- There is increased consumer demand for healthier food choices when eating out. Leading restaurateurs are offering these choices regardless of the recognition by the Eat Smart! Restaurant Program.
Due to these changes, the Huron County Health Unit will no longer be able to support the yearly re-certification and promotion of the Eat Smart! Restaurant program.
Other programs and resources are available to support restaurants in their quest to offer healthier choices to patrons.
