In the province of Ontario, registered dietitians are regulated health care professionals. That means that dietitians have successfully completed a four year degree in foods and nutrition, a one year internship, and a national registration exam. Dietitians also have to report to a regulated professional body. Many dietitians also have masters degrees and additional credentials.

Nutritionist is not a regulated health profession. Some dietitians may call themselves a nutritionist. Traditionally, dietitians who worked in the community used the title nutritionist and dietitians who work in the hospital used the title dietitian. But not all nutritionists are dietitians.

If your health care provider describes themselves as a nutritionist, ask for their credentials and experience. Anyone can use the title nutritionist. Nutritionists do not always have the same amount or type of education as a dietitian. Be knowledgeable about your health care provider, because your health matters.
