Do you know that Calories and calories are not the same thing?
Calories with a capital "C" actually stands for kilocalories. One kilocalorie is equal to one thousand (1000) calories. We often see calories written with a small "c". Most of the time it actually refers to kilocalories.
Calories, listed on Nutrition Facts tables, measure the amount of energy a food gives us. Our bodies need energy (or Calories) to fuel everything that we do. Calories keep our hearts beating, our lungs breathing, our minds thinking, and our muscles moving.
If we consume more energy than we need, we gain weight. If we consume less energy than we need, we lose weight. If we consume just the right amount of energy, we stay the same weight.
Maintaining a healthy weight is important to our physical and mental health.
