Hunger in Canada is distinct from the more widely-held perception of hunger typified within developing nations. We must conscientiously make this distinction without belittling the situation internationally but merely differentiating the nature of the problem domestically and internationally.
Hunger in Canada exists because structural factors, such as poverty and lack of affordable housing perpetuate it. There is a link between domestic hunger and other social issues that resonate in our society. For example, education, health care, health, child care, gender equality and the list goes on.
Hunger in Canada can be alleviated. Everyone can play a part in reducing hunger. People can volunteer at their local food bank, donate food and funds, approach their local representatives, join local National Hunger Awareness Day activities and events, and spread the word in their workplaces, faith groups and schools.
