Health Unit Backgrounder
The Huron County Health Unit is one of 36 health units in Ontario. We serve a population of approximately 65,000 in an area of 3,400 square kilometres. This includes nine municipalities. Located along the east shore of Lake Huron, Huron County is the most agriculturally productive County in Ontario. Huron County has three economic pillars - agriculture, manufacturing and tourism.
The Huron County Health Unit offers programs that:
- promote healthy infant and child development, positive mental, reproductive, sexual and dental health
- prevent cancer, heart disease, substance abuse, tobacco use and injuries
- protect our communities from communicable and infectious disease, and environmental hazards such as contaminated food and water.
We are governed by the Board of Health. We are mandated by the Health Protection and Promotion Act. The Huron County Health Unit is accredited.
The Health Unit is an essential community health service with over 75 dedicated staff. Public health nurses, public health inspectors, public health promoters, a dietitian, epidemiologist and other professionals promote and protect the health of our community.
We have two office locations in the county – one located in Wingham and the main office located outside of Clinton. Please contact us for more information on any of our programs and services.
