When should I call 9-1-1?

Dial 9-1-1 when you need emergency assistance from Police, a Fire department or Emergency Medical Services (an ambulance) to:

  • Call for medical help
  • Report a fire
  • Stop a crime that is in progress
  • Whenever you or someone around you is in a life-threatening situation

When you call 9-1-1 for assistance, be prepared to supply:

  • What help is needed (ambulance, fire or police assistance)
  • What happened
  • Where the help is needed (the address or location and main intersection of where the emergency is located)
  • The telephone number you are calling from
  • Who you are

Make sure your address is visible:

  • House numbers should be placed on the front of the house or building facing the roadway, where they are clearly visible
  • Use large, plain numbers - no fancy script or hard-to-read lettering
  • Use contrasting colours (black on white) or reflective material
  • If you are calling at night, turn on the outside lights of your house so that emergency responders can easily see your location

Do NOT call 9-1-1 during an emergency to:

  • Locate relatives during an emergency
  • Find out availability and locations for emergency shelters or other services
  • Find non-emergency numbers for Police, Fire or Emergency Medical Services
