Response Times

Huron County EMS Paramedics are college-trained professionals who are highly skilled in all aspects of pre-hospital emergency medicine. They treat a wide variety of injuries and medical conditions, while providing supportive patient care and safe transport to an appropriate medical facility.

Using an advanced computer-aided dispatch system linked to a 9-1-1 system means the time from receiving a call to the arrival of a paramedic crew is only a matter of minutes. Since Huron County has 24-hour ambulance coverage and paramedic service on site, staff are legislated to leave the base within 90 seconds for emergency calls and in 3 minutes for non-emergency calls.

Huron County's Emergency Medical Services responds to approximately 11,000 requests for ambulance service per year.

To assist in reducing response times, the County of Huron implemented 24-hour coverage in 2003; during the day there are a minimum of six ambulances on-site and a minimum of five ambulances are on-site at night. Between the hours of 0700 and midnight, the Huron County EMS has Rapid Response Units implemented. These units help to reduce the response time to the patient.

Huron County EMS is dispatched from the London Central Ambulance Communication Centre (CACC); this has improved EMS response time - the time from receipt of a call to their arrival on the scene.

Huron EMS continually aims to improve their response times in the delivery of pre-hospital medical care to all residents and visitors of Huron County.

In 2008, the Province of Ontario introduced new legislation for Performance Measures (Ontario Regulation 267/08), that requires an 8 minute response to Canadian Triage Acuity Scale (CTAS) 1 calls and 6 minutes for a call requiring a defibrillator on scene. Each Operator of an EMS system must indicate their response times for CTAS 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5 calls as well. Therefore, the request is to determine the percentage of times that an EMS system can respond to a CTAS 1 call in 8 minutes or less.
